Report: Israel to launch $200M to develop Israel-Egypt border

By The Jerusalem Times Staff September 24, 2018 04:10:52In the latest development in the long-running spat between Israel and Egypt over the disputed territories of the Golan Heights, the country’s minister of the environment, Moti Yogev, has announced a $200 million project aimed at upgrading the borders of the country, which the latter claims as its own.

Yogev made the announcement Monday during a visit to the Israeli coastal town of Kiryat Gat, where the Egyptian government announced plans to construct a new border fence and erect an artificial island in the Jordan River that will be used for Israeli settlement in the occupied Golan.

According to the statement from the minister’s office, the project will “add up to $200m for improving the border.”

The project will be funded by the government of Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.

The UAE is Egypt’s main oil and gas supplier, while Kuwait is Egypt ‘s major neighbor, and a key backer of the Egyptian military and the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Egyptian military seized control of the disputed territory from Syria and is currently fighting to reclaim it.

The Israeli military has maintained a tight blockade on the area since 1967, during which Israel occupied the area.

According a 2014 report by the International Crisis Group, the area constitutes about 70 percent of the entire Palestinian territory, with approximately 20 percent of it controlled by the Palestinian Authority.

Israel maintains a buffer zone and is responsible for a portion of the land’s population.

The Israeli-Egyptian border is one of the most contentious and sensitive issues between the two countries.

Egypt, for its part, has sought to prevent a breakaway state from forming between the Palestinians and the Jewish state, arguing that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is rooted in the 1967 Six-Day War.

The latest round of fighting between Israel, Egypt and Syria flared last month, with Egyptian jets conducting air raids over Israeli territory.

In a series of clashes between Israel’s army and Syrian troops, Syrian troops reportedly fired artillery shells and rockets toward Israeli towns, including Beit Hanoun and al-Quds.

Last month, Egypt also accused Israel of using chemical weapons against Syrian soldiers, which it called an “act of war.”

In response, Israel and the United States agreed to conduct air raids in the vicinity of Syria and agreed to cooperate on a joint response, with the United Nations Security Council authorizing an “urgent, comprehensive, and credible” response.

Egypt has been criticized by both Israel and its Arab neighbors for its actions in the region, which have raised tensions and prompted regional tensions.

Israel has been waging a war against the Islamic State group, which seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, and is now trying to defeat the group in its own backyard.

In December, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Egypt is “the most dangerous place in the Middle East,” in reference to the recent conflict in the Guez region.

Israel and Egypt also have longstanding disputes over the fate of the 2,000-year-old Dead Sea.

Israel claims the water is a part of its sovereign territory, while Egypt claims it is an internationally recognized “watershed” under international law.

Both countries accuse each other of using water resources for military purposes, with Israel accusing Egypt of violating international law by building a large water canal to divert water from the Mediterranean to the Mediterranean Sea.

In addition, Egypt has been building its own military infrastructure on disputed territories in the past few years, including a military base near the Israeli port city of Ashkelon, as well as a military airport at the northern Gaza Strip.
